Stonehage support students from Stellenbosch University and in particular the Faculty of Law. On 13 December 2007 several delegates from Stonehage and Links SA Trust visited the Faculty of Law. From 2008 Stonehage will also award a medal to a final-year LLB student who has demonstrated academic excellence, combined with community involvement and upliftment.
Colloquium on enrichment liability The future of enrichment liability in South African Law was the focus of a colloquium on 27 October in the Old Main Building. The event was organized by Prof Jacques du Plessis from the Department of Private and Roman Law. Seventeen delegates attended this colloquium, five judges from the Supreme Court of Appeal, 2 judges from the High Court as well as several researchers.
US Legal Aid Clinic assists those in need The US Legal Aid Clinic was inaugurated in 1988 with only two appointments, one lawyer and one secretary. Today, the clinic consists of 48 members of staff
Prof JE du Plessis elected as Vice President of the World Society of Mixed Jurisdictions Jurists (WSMJJ)
Prof Jacques du Plessis from the Department of Private and Roman Law was recently elected as the Vice President of the World Society of Mixed Jurisdiction Jurists (WSMJJ). The main aim of the WSMJJ is to focus on and enhance interest in mixed jurisdictions, ie legal systems influenced by more than one of the established legal systems.
Stellenbosch University students ranked in top 20 in international moot court competition A team of law students from the University of Stellenbosch recently finished in 16th position out of 178 universities in the 14th Annual Willem C Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot held in Vienna . The team was represented by Chrystal October, Malcolm Ratz, André Pelser and Franziska Myburgh, and coached by Prof Mustaqeem da Gama and Mr Louw Kriegler from the Faculty of Law. Prof Max Loubser receives the HB & MJ Thom Bursary and a grant from the Oppenheimer Memorial Trust for his two current research projects Prof Max Loubser is currently on research leave and working on two research projects. He is writing ‘n volume for the International Encyclopaedia of Tort Law on South African law of delict. The second project focuses on strict liability for defects in products. This is also in the ambit of the Consumer Protection Bill 2007 It is for this second research project that Prof Loubser received the HB & MJ Thom Bursary as well as a grant from the Oppenheimer Memorial Trust to conduct research at the Max Planck Insitute in Hamburg as well as the University of Edinburgh.
Mock trial prepares students for reality: Two participants from Stellenbosch University, Faculty of Law - Robert Kokozka & Ashley Williams Law students from two Cape universities were given the opportunity to put their studies into practice at a mock criminal trial at the Cape High Court on Monday night. The "moot" court case was part of the justice department's continuing effort to transform the legal profession and legal scholarships.
Prof GF Lubbe: New Dean of the Faculty of Law, Stellenbosch University
Prof Gerhard Lubbe (57), a professor in the department of Private Law and Roman Law at the University of Stellenbosch was recently appointed as the new dean of the faculty.
Visit to the University of Botswana, Botswana The Faculty of Law took part in a short visit to the University of Botswana at the end of April 2007. Other academic environments who also took part in this initiative include the Faculty of Education, African languages, the department of Economics and the Centre for Sustainable Develepment from Stellenbosch University. This visit was organized by the University's International Office and the main aim of the visit was to establish a personal relationship with our counterparts at the University of Botswana and for the respective vice chancelors to sign a Memo of Understanding. An information session was also held to provide prospective students with the necessary information and application documents. On the final evening of the visit an alumni function was organized which was also attended by Prof Russel Botman and Prof Walter Claassen.

Prof Tjakie Naudé was a visiting fellow at the Oxford Institute of European and Comparative Law
Prof Tjakie Naudé was a visiting fellow at the Oxford Institute of European and Comparative Law from February 2006 until the end of November 2006, where she conducted comparative research on the statutory control of unfair contract terms. Whilst there, she was invited to address the Oxford Comparative Law Discussion Group on the introduction of unfair terms legislation in South Africa. She will also present a paper on the introduction of unfair terms legislation in South Africa from a comparative perspective at the International Consumer Law Conference to be held in Cape Town from 11-13 April 2007, where she will disseminate aspects of her research. In addition, she conducted comparative research on the incorporation of standard terms into contracts at Oxford. For this purpose she also visited the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Private Law in Hamburg as the guest of Professor Reinhard Zimmermann. Whilst there, she gave a paper to a discussion group at the Institute on incorporation of standard terms under the Unidroit Principles of International Commercial Contracts from a comparative perspective.
