Bucerius / Stellenbosch Exchange
In December 2005 the law faculty concluded an exchange agreement with the Bucerius Law School of Hamburg, Germany. The faculty thereby joins a select group of some of the most prominent law faculties in the world.  The agreement enables two final year students from Stellenbosch to follow the Bucerius Program in International and Comparative Business Law, which is presented in English in Hamburg. Two students from Bucerius will then in turn follow second semester LLM modules presented at Stellenbosch. Bucerius, the first private law faculty in Germany, recently achieved the best results of all German law faculties in the national first state examinations in law, and is regarded as one of the most prominent law schools in Europe. The agreement was signed by the Dean, Prof Marius de Waal, and Prof Axel Kaemmerer, on behalf of Prof Karsten Schmidt, President of Bucerius. The Director of the  International Office, Dr Robert Kotze, was also present a the signing of the agreement

ARUSHA ICRC Moot Court Competition
A team from the Faculty of Law participated in the 5th ICRC Moot Court Competition in Arusha, Tanzania in November 2005. This competition is held annually for all universities on the African continent and is sponsored by the Red Cross, Geneve. Thirteen universities participated this year. The Stellenbosch team continued to the last round of this competition.

Morti Malherbe Lecture

The annual Morti Malherbe lecture was presented by Judge JJ (Hannes) Fagan. Judge Fagan is currently the inspecting judge of all correctional facilities and the title of his lecture was: Gevangenisse: Probleme en oplossings. The Morti Malherbe Lecture is presented in remembrance of Prof Morti Malherbe, first dean of the Faculty from 1921 until his retirement in 1955. 
 


14th African Human Rights Moot Court Competition
Nicole Singh and Shanelle van der Berg represented the Faculty at the 14th African Human Rights Moot Court Competition. The problem they had to argue concerned the applicability of International Human Rights instruments in an African context, focusing on unconstitutional change of government, the use of mercenaries & child soldiers and treatment while in prison. There were about 50 teams from the African continent participating in this moot court and the Stellenbosch team came 3rd.


Prof Marius J de Waal appointed as dean of the Faculty of Law
Prof Marius de Waal was recently appointed as the new dean of the Faculty of Law. (Prof JSA Fourie, who held this position for a total of 13 years retired in March 2005. )
Prof de Waal commenced with his studies in 1978 as a B Comm (with Law subjects) first year student, living in Helshoogte residence. After completing the B Comm (with Law subjects), cum laude, he also graduates with the LLB, LLM and LLD degrees at Stellenbosch University. From 1984 until 1989 he holds the position of senior lecturer at the Faculty and in the Department of Private and Roman Law. Thereafter he is appointed as professor at the University of Johannesburg (then RAU) for two academic years.  In Jan uary 1992 he is appointed as professor in the Department of Private and Roman Law at the Faculty of Law, Stellenbosch University.



International Property Law Conference
The Faculty of Law hosted a conference on the 5-6 April 2005 reflecting on current issues in Property Law. Contributions were made by world–renowned Property Law specialists.The event was attended by more than 60 delegates, under which eminent national and international academics, who participated in a lively debate on land reform and access to housing; land registration and alternatives to land ownership; property in common law and civil law; and issues of constitutional property and property theory.


Prof James Fourie
Prof JSA Fourie will retire as dean of the Faculty of Law in March 2005. Prof Fourie obtained his BA (Law) degree at Stellenbosch University in 1964, the LLB degree in 1966 and the LLD (1978) and Certificate in Tax Law (1980) both at UNISA.
He was first appointed in 1969 at the University of Port Elizabeth as a lecturer in commercial law. In 1970 he was appointed as senior lecturer at Stellenbosch University, first at the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences and from 1978 in the Department of Mercantile Law. In 1981 he is promoted to professor in the Department of Mercantile Law and also acts as departmental chair. From 1991 – 1994 he is appointed as dean of the Faculty of Law which was a three-year-rotating position. In 1995 he is appointed as the first pemanent dean of the Faculty of Law.
He also served on the US Board from 1998 and since 2002 on the US rector’s management team.



 


Director of Asset management firm visits Faculty
Mnr Georgala is an alumnus of the faculty and since 1992 also involved with particular development initiatives in the Faculty, focusing specifically on financial assistance for students from perviously disadvantaged communities. 
 


Maties impress at International Commercial Arbitration Moot
Six Maties studying at the Law Faculty went to Vienna, Austria, to compete in the twelfth annual Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot from 18 – 24 March. For more information visit :  http://www.sun.ac.za/news/NewsItem_Eng.asp?Lang=2&ItemID=7733&Zone=A05



Labour Law Conference
The Centre for International and Comparative Labour and Social Security Law (CICLASS) of the Department of Mercantile Law co-hosted a seminar on 31 March - 1 April at the Law Faculty, reflecting on ten years of the Labour Relations Act of 1995. The event included contributions by world-renowned labour law specialists such as Prof Dr Manfred Weiss and Prof Sir Bob Hepple, and local participants ranging from Labour Court judges to eminent academics, practitioners and trade union members. The event was attended by more than 70 delegates, who participated in a lively debate on the successes and failures of the LRA to date. The seminar was generally viewed as a step forward in the evaluation and development of South African labour law.


 

Prof WL de Vos elected as chair of the Ethics Committee of the Magistrates Commission
Prof WL de Vos was recently elected as chair of the Ethics Committee of the Magistrates Commission. Prof de Vos was appointed to serve on the Magistrates Commission by the Minister of Justice in 2004. The Ethics Committee of this Commission investigates alleged unethical and inappropriate acts of magistrates and advises the Magistrates Commission on such matters.


 

Prof SE van der Merwe appointed as member of the National Council for Correctional Services
Prof SE van der Merwe was recently appointed, in terms of the Correctional Services Act 111 of 1998, as a member of the National Council for Correctional Services. The Council consists of 17 members who are appointed for a period of five years.

 



Dr Ranchod appointed to the Board of Children’s Rights International
Dr
Ranchod was recently appointed to the Board of Children’s rights International, a newly established body aimed at promoting the rights of children globally. He will be addressing a plenary session of the 4th World Congress on Family Law and Children’s Rights which will be held in Cape Town 20-24 March 2005.
