Justice O-Regan Prestige Lecture on Equality On 4 August 2004, Judge Kate O-Regan of the Constitutional Court delivered a prestige lecture in the JC De Wet Haal at the US law faculty entitled, Equality under our New Constitutional Order. In her lecture Judge O-Regan highlighted the central role of the value of equality in our new constitutional order. She also illustrated, through a discussion of the case law, the central role of human dignity in the Court's jurisprudence on unfair discrimination. The lecture was well attended and included representatives of the bench, the advocates and attorney's proffession, academics, students and representatives of various non-governmental organisations. The lecture was sponsored by the law firm Webber Wentzel and Bowens.
Dr Tjakie Naude recieves the Spoor & Fisher prize for the best first contribution to TSAR, 2003 Dr Naude received this prize for her contribution: "The preconditions for recognition of a specific type or sub-type of contract - the essentialia-naturalia approach and the typological method" 2003 Tydskrif vir die Suid-Afrikaanse Reg 411-431.
Prof WL de Vos appointed to serve on the Magistrates Commission Prof WL de Vos was recently appointed by the Minister of Justice to serve on the Magistrates Commission for a five year term. Prof de Vos was elected by the Association of Law Teachers as their representative to the Commission.The Magistrates Commission is a statutory body - its members include magistrates, representatives of the legal profession, politicians and a representative from the Association of Law Teachers. The Magistrates Commission was established, inter alia, to ensure that the appointment, promotion, transfer or discharge of, or disciplinary steps against judicial officers in the lower courts take place without favour or prejudice, and that the applicable laws and administrative directions in connection with such actions are applied uniformly and correctly.
Mary Nel to study at Cambridge on a Commonwealth Scholarship Mary Nel has been offered a place at CambridgeUniversity [England] to study an MPhil in Criminology, commencing in October 2004. In addition, she was awarded a Commonwealth Academic Staff Scholarship, which covers all costs associated with her study. Upon returning in July 2005, she intends to make use of her new-found knowledge to initiate a criminology course at LLM level and to complete her LLD degree.
