The annual Wordfest (Woordfees) alumni event was once again a highlight on the MatiesAlumni calendar. Some 400 MatiesAlumni attended the drama production "My Sarie Marais", one of the many star productions at this year's Wordfest in Stellenbosch, in the HB Thom Theater recently. "My Sarie Marais", by playwright Deon Opperman featured well-known actors Deon Coetzee and Hanli Rolfes in the roles of Pieter and Sarie.
"The gala event for alumni during the Wordfest has become a highlight in Stellenbosch. The Alumni office is a firm supporter of the Wordfest and will continue to encourage alumni to use the "power of words" to stay in contact with us and to give their opinion on matters pertaining to the future plans of the University," said Ms Heidi October, Coordinator: Alumni Relations.
Prof Magda Fourie, Vice-Rector: Teaching was the speaker at the event and said that MatiesAlumni are important ambassadors for the University and should take part in the range of opportunities for discussion that the University presents. She encouraged MatiesAlumni to take part in the election of Council Members. (The election closes on 25 March.)
According to Prof Fourie, the theme of this year's Wordfest "Baljaar" (to play boisterously) is not only applicable to soccer but also to the many activities happening at the University with a number of balls being kept in the air.
